Aí«í_homoeopathic medicine prepared using traditional, hand potentisation production methods, from the mother tincture of the whole, fresh plant. Best known of the homoeopathic and Weleda medicines, Arnica is the specific first aid & rehabilitation medicine for injuries, accidents and trauma. Arnica helps to minimise the effects of physical and/or emotional shock, whilst helping to reduce swelling, repair and heal bruised and sprained tissues and muscles.
The European mountain flower, Arnica (Arnica montana) has been used for centuries in herbal medicine. Arnica is from an important medicinal plant family, the Compositae family, which includes Chamomile, Calendula, Echinacea, Dandelion, Chicory and Yarrow. They are all known for their anti -inflammatory qualities. This plant family is uniquely characterised by flowers that are in fact, hundreds of individual flowers gathered on a single base and appearing like a single flower.
Along with feelings of shock and disorientation, redness, swelling, heat and pain are the common symptoms experienced as a result of an injury. This inflammatory response, the body’s normal response to injury, is a complex sequence of events that helps to protect and repair injured tissues. An increase in blood flow and blood vessel permeability in the injured area allows fluid, cells and substances to leak into the tissue spaces, phagocytes to destroy or inactivate foreign invaders like bacteria, plasma proteins that are crucial for immune responses, and release of chemical mediators that potentiate a number of the inflammatory responses.
The final stage of the inflammatory process is tissue repair, with regeneration of epithelial and connective tissue, eg. skin, and secretion of large quantities of collagen, the fibres that make up the matrix of most connective tissue.
The actions of Arnica complement and support RICE – the initial first aid treatment used to help minimise the effects of injury:
Rest, to prevent further damage
Ice, to reduce bleeding and pain
Compression, to reduce bleeding and swelling
Elevation, of the injured limb to help reduce swelling
*Rehabilitation, the process of repair and recovery from an injury, can take as long as six weeks depending on the type of injury.
