In herbal medicine herbs known as adaptogens have a much valued tonic action on the body. An adaptogen is defined as having 3 characteristics: 1) it must be an innocuous substance and cause minimal disorders in the physiological functions of the organism 2) non-specific action 3) normalizing action on the organism.
In herbal medicine Siberian ginseng is considered to be an adaptogen and has been used to enhance the body’s stress coping mechanisms, increase mental alertness, improve work output and the quality of work produced under stressful circumstances. Gotu kola also has traditional use as an adaptogen and is considered similar to ginseng in its action. Both Gotu kola and damiana have been traditionally used as nervous system tonics, providing relief of stress and mild anxiety. Oats has traditionally been used to support the nervous system and is indicated in nervous debility and exhaustion.
Envital contains the Celloid® Minerals magnesium phosphate and potassium phosphate which are traditionally indicated as nervous system tonics. Also present is ferrous fumarate which has the advantage of being only slightly astringent unlike most other supplemental iron salts - therefore when used as directed should not cause gastric irritation or constipation. Vitamin C is included to facilitate gastrointestinal uptake of iron.
