Mode of Action
CoQ10 is a vital nutrient for many biochemical reactions including the regulation of conversion of food into energy. It also increases the body’s capacity for oxygen uptake. For these reasons, CoQ10 may be of assistance in circumstances when increased oxygen uptake is desirable, e.g. athletes, as well as to increase body energy, particularly in the elderly.
Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant and free radical scavenger which is present in every cell in the body, particularly in muscular tissue such as the heart. CoQ10 levels decline with age and this can affect the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively and to maintain adequate circulation. Research at the Baker Medical Institute in Melbourne has shown that aged heart muscle cells fed CoQ10 performed as well as younger cardiac cells. Additionally, studies conducted by the Heart Research Institute in Sydney have demonstrated that supplementing with CoQ10 can remarkably enhance the resistance of LDL (bad) cholesterol to oxidative attack. (Oxidised cholesterol is considered to have a major role in coronary artery disease). Other research has shown that daily doses of 150 mg of CoQ10 can improve both the symptoms and exercise tolerance in heart patients.
Contraindications and Cautions
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy or lactation
- Contraindicated with warfarin therapy unless on medical advice
Side Effects
None noted in the literature
Medicine Interactions
- May reduce the efficacy of warfarin. Supplementation with CoQ10 is advisable when taking statin drugs (eg Levostatin) as they can adversely affect CoQ10 levels
