The name ‘Sarsaparilla’ is derived from the Spanish words ‘sarza’ for shrub or bramble, and ‘parilla’ for little vine. It has been used commercially as a foaming agent in root beer and for flavouring in food products such as frozen dairy desserts, candy and baked goods. It was not uncommon for cowboys in old Western movies who didn’t want whisky to order Sarsaparilla, which was a popular beverage in the times before modern soft drinks.
Sarsaparilla displays a number of different actions. It contains compounds that have a diuretic action. It is also an alterative and helps to cleanse the blood. These properties make it useful in a variety of skin conditions, especially those of a chronic nature.
