Blessed Thistle has traditionally been used by nursing mothers to support breast milk production, however it has also been used in the past as a digestive tonic. Another use is to assist in relieving headaches that are associated with menstruation.
Blessed Thistle is native to Asia and the Mediterranean region and has been cultivated in Europe and the United States as a medicinal herb. This 'bitter' annual, thistle like herb grows up to 50 cm high with the Whole Herb being used for therapeutic benefits.
The name ‘Cnicus’ is derived from the Greek ‘knekos’ or safflower, a name that was formerly attached to thistles. ‘Benedictus’ is from the Latin meaning ‘blessed’, which was used due to the plant’s curative properties that were considered a gift from God.
