Information About The Herb Evening Primrose



Botanical Name: Oenothera biennis

Plant Family: Onagraceae

Common Names: Common Evening Primrose, Fever Plant, Field Primrose, King's Cureall, Night Willow-herb, Primrose, Scabish, Scurvish, Sun Drop, Tree Primrose

Origin: It is found throughout North America, east of the Rockies to the Atlantic

History: The large flowers are a fine yellow color with a delicate fragrance and usually open between 6 and 7 o'clock in the evening, hence the name Evening Primrose

The generic name is derived from oinos, 'wine' and thera, 'a hunt'

Usage

Medicinal Parts Used: The whole plant, including bark

Evening Primrose oil is used for:

Brain and Nervous System Conditions

  • mental depression

Cardiovascular Conditions

  • eases the pain of angina by opening up the blood vessels
  • lowers blood pressure

Female Conditions

  • female disorders associated with pelvic fullness
  • menopausal symptoms
  • menstrual problems
  • relieves menstrual cramping ( with Dong Quai and Chaste Berries)
  • symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS)

Gastrointestinal Conditions

  • dyspepsia
  • gastro-intestinal disorders of a functional origin
  • stimulates digestion

Liver Conditions

  • hepatic torpor (sluggish liver)
  • lowers cholesterol levels
  • slows the production of cholesterol
  • stimulates the liver

Respiratory Tract Conditions

  • spasmodic asthma
  • whooping cough

Other

  • stimulates the spleen
  • to treat Multiple Sclerosis

Externally it can be used for:

  • rashes
  • skin irritations

Action:

  • astringent [a binding agent that contracts organic tissue, reducing secretions or discharges of mucous and
