Information About The Herb Dill


General Information

Botanical Name:  Anethum graveolens, Peucedanum graveolens

Plant Family: Compositae

Origin: Native to Southern Russia and the Mediterranean Region.

History: References to Dill have been found in records in ancient Egyptian tombs.

The plant is referred to in Mathew 23 in the Bible. It was known in Pliny's Day and used in the Middle Ages. The name is from the Norse word dilla, 'to lull', because of its carminative effect. 

Culpepper states: 'Mercury has the dominion of this plant ...it strengthens the brain'.

Tradition:

  • smoked or dried in holy fires to mark the festival of St John's Eve (23rd June) with Vervain, St John's Wort and Yarrow
  • used in incantations, magic rites, spells and charms for protection against witchcraft

  • diuretic [an agent that increases the volume and flow of urine which cleanses the urinary system]
  • galactagogue [an agent that encourages or increases the secretion of milk]
  • soporific [promotes sleep]
  • stimulant [an agent that excites or quickens the functional activity of the tissues giving more energy]
  • stomachic [an agent that strengthens, stimulates or tones the stomach]
