Information about the herb Cornflower

Centaurea cyanus , also known as Bluebottle is part of the Compositae plant family. Grows wild in England and has been cultivated the world over as a garden plant in several colors, not just blue.


Botanical Name:  Centaurea cyanus

Plant Family: Compositae

Common Names: Batchelor's Button, Bluebottle, Bluebow, Blue Cap, Blue Centaury, Bluet (French), Cyani

History: It is named after the Centaur, Chiron who legend has it taught mankind the healing powers of herbs and the Latin name cyanus after the Goddess Cyanus (Flora) whose favorite flower it was.

Tradition: It was used for:

  • an antidote to poisons and venoms combined with Plantain, Horsetail and Comfrey
  • the seeds or leaves in wine were said to protect you from the plague and infectious diseases

Usage of Cornflower

Medicinal Parts Used: Flowers. leaves, seeds

Cornflower is used for:

Gastrointestinal Conditions

  • dyspepsia

Externally Cornflower was used as a water distilled from the petals for:

  • eye weakness and inflammation
  • venomous bites

Other Uses:

  • cosmetic purposes
  • dried petals are used in potpourri for color
  • the juice mixed with alum water can be used for painting water colors

Action:

  • diuretic [an agent that increases the volume and flow of urine which cleanses the urinary system]
  • emmenagogue [an agent that promotes menstrual flow] (similar to Blessed Thistle)
  • stimulant [an agent that excites or quickens the functional activity of the tissues giving more energy]
  • tonic [an agent that tones, strengthens and invigorates organs or the entire organism giving a feeling of well-being]
