Blessed Thistle is an old English name for a large family of plants occurring chiefly in Europe and Asia. There are 14 species of Thistles just in Great Britain.

Botanical Name: Cnicus benedictus, Carbenia benedicta

Common Name: St. Benedict Thistle, Holy Thistle, Spotted Thistle, Cardin, Carduus Benedictus

Plant Family: Compositae

Origin: The plant grows wild in southern Europe, western Asia and North America.

History: Blessed Thistle is said to have obtained its name from its wonderful reputation as an heal all, being supposed to even cure the plague

  • volatile oil

Usage

Medicinal Parts Used: The whole herb

Blessed Thistle is commonly used for:

Brain and Nervous System Conditions

  • dizziness
  • hysteria
  • melancholia
  • migraine headache
  • nervous prostration
  • strengthens the brain and the memory
  • vertigo

Cardiovascular Conditions

  • purification and circulation of blood

Female Conditions

  • promotes milk supply to nursing mothers 

Gastrointestinal Conditions

  • constipation
  • digestive problems
  • flatulence

As a cold infusion it is used for:

  • a tonic
  • increasing appetite
  • weak and debilitated conditions of the stomach

Liver Conditions

  • liver and gallbladder ailments

Parasitic Conditions

  • worms

As a warm infusion it is one of the best diaphoretics known for:

  • intermittent fever

Externally used for:

  • chill blains
  • sores
  • wounds
