How it works
Investigation continues to determine how St John’s Wort works physiologically, and several mechanisms of action have been proposed. Although no single constituent of the plant can be considered to be responsible for the therapeutic action of the herb, hypericin (an oil-soluble anthraquinone glycoside) is considered to be an integral part of its action. The clinical studies showing that St John’s Wort is an effective treatment for low mood or despondency, used an extract of the leaves, stems and flowers standardised to contain 0.33% of hypericin.
Dosage
Adults - Take 1 tablet 3 times daily with meals, or as professionally prescribed.
Children (under 12 years) - Only as professionally prescribed

Medicine Interactions
Consult your healthcare professional before use if you are taking, or think you may be taking, warfarin, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), cyclosporine, tacrolimus (anti-transplant rejection), protease inhibitors or reverse transcriptase inhibitors (antiviral drugs), methadone, amitriptyline, simvastatin, atorvastatin, omeprazole, irinotecan or imatinib (cancer drugs). St John’s wort has been noted to increase the action of the hepatic P450 enzyme system, which may decrease the efficacy of these medications.
Consult your health care professional before use if you are taking prescription antidepressants (tricyclics or SSRIs). St John’s wort may interfere with the action of these medications.
