The major use of Slippery Elm is as a demulcent and emollient, helping to heal irritated and inflamed surfaces of digestive and stomach membranes. It also helps in normalising elimination, hence used for both diarrhoea and constipation. The herb is also used extensively as a nutrient in convalescence. Part of the herb used is the Inner Bark.
Slippery Elm is one of the best-known and frequently used herbs. It was essentially the food and medicine of the American Pioneers and the American Red Indians. Many pioneer families used it as food when nothing else was available to save them from starving. Over the years it has become one of the most valued remedies in herbal medicine.
The inner bark of the Slippery Elm is tough and flexible with a fine, fibrous texture. It has an odour somewhat like Fenugreek and has a mucilaginous, insipid taste. When ground to a fine powder this bark makes an excellent flour extender and can be used in a variety of recipes.
Slippery Elm contains mucilage, a slimy, smooth chemical compound that gives the herb its emollient and demulcent properties. It is soothing to irritated and inflamed surfaces, such as mucous membranes. In addition to this soothing property, Slippery Elm’s mucilage content absorbs water, acting as a bulk laxative, encouraging bowel movement, and helping to relieve constipation. It can also be useful in diarrhoea where it absorbs water and so can decrease transit time and assist more normal stool formation.
